Week 3 Response Ecological Environment

There are many artists interested in many different subjects, and some of them are interested in ecological environment. I found this is really interesting too, to use the natural plants, environment or phenomenon as the art work.

Many artists, attracted by the interdisciplinary holism, are intrigued by ecological analysis and environmental activism. They see opportunities for artists to uniquely participate in the environmental regeneration. Artists can shape a new aesthetic that combines a visual sense of place, a willingness to physically “sculpt” living matter, an engagement in public life, and an eagerness to invent new syntheses of science, action, and art.

These are Hans Haacke’s art works

He used the natural environment as the tool to make art works. The first picture is the cube he made that contained water in it. By closing the cube, and made the environment stayed by its own without any exchanges with the outside word. The water in the cube could keep the balance, the water and the water vapor. The second picture is the man-made environment for the grass. Hans controlled the temperature, light, and water. For this project, the artist needs to analyse what kind of the element does the plant need to maintain it’s life. The third picture is a machine that recording of gallery’s internal climate in exhibition. It has ink in it that could draw on the paper while it is recording the change of the environment.

In these art works that made by Hans Haacke, we could see that to build a work of the natural world needs lots of researches to make it more like the “real world.” To re-create the real-life environment is not that easy as we thought, such as an ecosphere (a closed environment system that the plant, water and other microorganisms can keep the environment in a certain balance).

This man, David Latimer, who made this ecosphere in 1960. He put water and the plant in it then sealed the bottle. What he needs to do now is ecto turn the bottle around to make sure every side of the bottle could get the sunlight. When I first saw this article I felt super excited that we actually could make a tiny world ourselves and I was also amazed by the vitality of the organism in that system, it was just like a tiny version of the earth. The balance of the system is the most important thing. By seeing this article, I feel that we need to cherish the environment we have now to keep it in a poised status or it might be destroyed in the future.

  1. Yes. It would be great to hear your thoughts on the limitations and advantages of models. Are they actually reproducible, useful? What do they tell or show us about the world? How do they work? What solutions does Haacke’s work offer or propose?
