Week 8 Response: Coding for Art

Many professionals and programers in the computer science field create apps and/or websites. Besides creating codes for online applications, some of them even produce art through coding. They combine art and technology by using their skills to show that computer science can be creative as well as artistic.

One of the examples of code generated art is a series of graphic images created by Jared Tarbell. He graduated college with a computer science degree, and he is also the co-founder of Etsy, one of the most popular online marketplace now. However, aside from being a programmer, he also produces art by using his professional skill. In his art statement, he says that

With an algorithmic goal in mind, I manipulate the work by finely crafting the semantics of each program. Specific results are pursued, although occasionally surprising discoveries are made.

Tarbell uses coding for artistic purposes, which shows that science and technology have become tools for art. He usually predict predict what the images look like, yet they are sometimes different than prediction, which is the fun part of art: never knowing what they are going to create.

He has creainterMomentaryPRNted multiple different graphic images by coding. One of them is called Intersection Momentary, which he has collaborated with other artists and is displayed at the Whitney Museum of American Art. He describes that the work is “a fun visualization defining the relationships between objects. Each one of them write a program of the same instructions: “A surface filled with 100 medium to small sized circles. Each circle has a different size and direction, but moves at the same slow rate.” The images have to show “the instantaneous intersections of the circle” and “the aggregate intersections of the circles.” Although they follow the same instructions, they all have different images in the end, which implies that people have different creativities, even at coding. Nevertheless, they all have created black-and-white abstract images with lines and circles. I am mostly attracted by Tarbell’s image, which looks like a image of a galaxy at first glance. However, as I look closer, I see traces of circles and the intersections of them. Tarbell and the other artists have created art works that make people look at more than just once and make them slow down their fast-paced lives to wonder what they are, which many artists believe is the purpose of art.

Coding on a computer, a popular technology nowadays, has developed a new form of art. Through the combination of art and technology, artists and programmers discover new and innovative methods to produce art works, which people from the past could never imagine. The new topic is how they are going to keep pushing their limits and go beyond their imaginations to produce even more creative art works through the intersection of art and technology and the collaboration between artists and programmers.
