My midterm paper focused around Hans Haacke’s work of ecological, organic art. I looked at three of his works: Chickens Hatching, Grass Grows, and Condensation Cube to show Haacke’s demonstration of his work being shown in “real time” in art galleries. Haacke wanted to first bring attention to the purpose of galleries, in which life unfolds.
As such, in Grass Grows, he approaches a structural critique of industrial and political systems that inform and determine the course of living systems. Besides the work that is presented in them, we are also living beings inside the galleries. He also emphasizes the ephemerality of materials inside galleries, such as art pieces and actual devices that are used to keep the museum running as it should.
