My project named The Universe as Fractal Art was inspired by Loren Carpenter and Benoit Mandelbrot, Loren Carpenter used fractal method to break one big triangle into four smaller triangles and repeated this action several times and finally got the animated mountain effect by using simple fractal method. Since I am really interested astronomy, I created several images and added them together to imitate the universe. Image 1-2 imitate our earth, 3-4 imitate the Solar System, 5-6 imitate the Solar Interstellar Neighborhood, 7-8 imitate the Milky Way, 9-10 imitate Local Galactic Group, 11-12 imitate Virgo Supercluster, 13-14 imitate Local Superclusters, 15-16 imitate the Observable Universe, 17-18 is an imagination that the center is our universe but outside our universe is the unknown part. Our universe is actually a masterpiece of fractal art. We can zoom in or zoom out to get similar pattern. Fractal art allowed me to think about our universe in a different way. Imagine our universe as a small ball, we can either zoom in or zoom out. If we can zoom out, will it be infinity? If we zoom in we will see billions of stars and if we keep zooming in we can see our Solar System and then our earth. If we keep zooming in we can see plants and animals and if we zoom in animals we will see different cells and finally quark. What will we see if we keep zooming in? Fractals allowed me to see and think about both macro world and micro world. Will the smallest thing in our world is actually the biggest thing outside the universe and we all actually living in a loop. There are just too many possibilities that we can think about. I am very curious about our universe so I made this project by using GIMP and the method of fractal art.
